I believe children are much more spiritually sensitive than most adults, perhaps because they are so much more innocent. In the culture where I grew up, people believe children and animals can see spirits.
My youngest daughter Grace possesses an extraordinary spiritual sensitivity. Before age seven, she sometimes heard voices and saw things invisible to adult eyes. She would calmly tell me about human shadows moving around us, completely unafraid. Angels, she said, spoke to her often.
The most remarkable moment came on my husband's birthday. We were sitting outside a Reno hotel around 8 PM—my husband, both daughters, and I. The night was unusually quiet. My husband was still angry from an earlier argument and had almost driven away alone, but something made him return to sit with us.
In that profound silence, Grace suddenly asked, "Did you hear God talking to us?" We all said no—there wasn't another soul around. Then she shared what she'd heard: "Listen to your inner voice."
I was stunned. No six-year-old could fabricate such wisdom. When I asked how she knew it was God, she replied with casual certainty, "I know Him. He sounds very nice." She spoke about the Almighty as naturally as if discussing a friend.
Later, my husband revealed that the message was meant for him. By listening to his inner voice, he avoided something potentially devastating. That night taught me how deeply God loves us, speaking clearly to those pure enough to hear Him. (Matthew 5:8: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.")
I do believe that the inner voice is the voice of God speaking to our souls. However, there are also voices that are not from God—they could be the voice of our spiritual enemy. So how do we distinguish the voice of God from the others?
To me, the voice of God is gentle yet clear, brief yet powerful. His words come quickly and unexpectedly, like flashes of knowing that bypass the mind entirely. I think this communication is telepathic—there's no time to think or analyze. The words simply arrive, fully formed, from somewhere deep within me. To me and many others, God's words bring peace. Jesus said "Peace be with you" to his disciples multiple times after his resurrection, as recorded in the Gospels of Luke and John.
I will always remember God's advice: Listen to your inner voice—the voice from God.

Grace's message that quiet night in Reno was calm and certain, without a trace of doubt. That stillness is often the clearest sign you're hearing from Him.
